Telecom Summit
************************************************************************
TELECOM SUMMIT. HP was represented by the Computer Systems Organization
and the Test and Measurement Organization at the First Latin America
Telecommunications Summit, July 6-9, in Venezuela. U.S. Secretary of
Commerce Ron Brown led a delegation representing 27 U.S. companies,
along with the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission and
State Department and Commerce officials. They met with delegations from
10 Latin countries, each headed by their respective Minister of
Communications and including other high-level officials and heads of
PTTs (government-owned postal, telephone and telegraph). The summit was
sponsored by the Department of Commerce and the Telecommunications
Industry Association to help U.S. companies increase their sales of
telecom products and services in Latin America, where more than $8
billion was spent on telecom in 1992 -- with only $1.5 billion going to
U.S. companies.
In addition to providing valuable personal contacts with officials and
the telecom community in Latin America, the summit gave the U.S.
delegation a first-hand look at the directions, investment plans and
challenges facing these countries.
HP participants included CSO's Jorge Perez Cantu, CSO Sales and
Marketing telecom manager, and Carlos Teixeira, district manager in
Brazil; TMO's Ruben Berron, Latin America sales manager, Mike
Cunningham, Communications Test Business Unit marketing manager, and
Mike Cuevas, Americas Marketing Center manager; and Salvador Quirarte,
country manager of Venezuela. Cunningham gave a presentation on Network
Technologies and Standards.

Australia Telecom Selects ISICAD COMMAND & Hewlett-Packard's OpenView
************************************************************************
Melbourne Australia -- AOTC's new corporate headquarters in Melbourne
houses one of the world's most sophisticated communications management
systems within its 43 story building. To date AOTC occupies nine floors
and will eventually occupy 41 floors integrating advanced technology.
ISICAD's COMMAND 5000 Physical Network Management system ($500,000) was
selected to manage the building's $13 million communications network.
COMMAND regulates and monitors the operations of the building's
integrated voice, data and video networks. Apart from recording the
locations of all voice, data and video equipment, the system will design
upgraded cabling, produce costs of projects and manage additions and
changes to the building's networks. Hewlett-Packard's OpenView
interfaces with COMMAND 5000 to monitor all data equipment in the
building.
Other advanced features in the building include a fiber optic ring (or
fiber distributed data infrastructure) operating at 100 megabits per
second for data transmission, and cabling of all floors to allow for
maximum flexibility and future growth in data, voice and video
requirements.
AOTC estimates that the present approach to managing communications
requiring 20 people will be scaled to 12 to 15 with the centralized
facilities.

Accugraph & HP: Continued Success in Telecom
************************************************************************
The list of telecommunications companies using automating systems from
Accugraph and HP continue to grow. In addition to long standing,
successful installations at companies like GTE, Unitel and AT&T,
Accugraph and HP have installed systems at US West, Northern Telecom,
Sprint, Newfoundland Telephone, New Brunswick Telephone and Manitoba
Telephone.
Successful pilots at US West and Northern Telecom are addressing
applications in work order provisioning with Accugraph's Central Office
Telephony Shell. This tool provides a series of Question & Answer sets
to facilitate the engineering process. On completion of the Q & A
session, the system automatically generates work orders, cable running
lists, specifications, narratives and other documents. In addition,
these large telecommunications companies use Accugraph's Show Bay/Show
Shelf (SBSS) module. SBSS performs automatic queries on linked database
tables to generate detailed bay elevations, containing specifics on part
numbers, shelf placement and other data. Changes in equipment placement
are automatically reflected in the corresponding database tables.
These telecom successes have also spread into the equipment
manufacturers with Accugraph/HP installations at Motorola-Nortel, AG
Communications and DSC Communications, and a preliminary pilot in the
works with Nynex. Foreign communications companies are also joining the
Accugraph/HP group, including Nitel in Nigeria and CableLink in the
United Kingdom.
Accugraph's powerful suite of telecommunications engineering tools
includes the Central Office Telephony Shell, Show Bay/Show Shelf and
Outside Plant Management. These tools, in addition to providing
specialized functions for telephony applications, utilize Accugraph's
graphical link to industry standard RDBMS products.

HP to Aquire Cerjac
************************************************************************
Hewlett-Packard Company and Cerjac, Inc. of Acton, Massachusetts, a
leading manufacturer of telecommunications test equipment, announced
July 22 that they have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding
for HP to acquire Cerjac. Terms were not disclosed.
Cerjac makes instrumentation, monitoring and specialized communications
products for the telecommunications industry, distributing its products
in North America. The company provides upgradable test and monitoring
products for the entire spectrum of transmission rates. Its product
lines are complementary to HP's telecom test equipment for network
equipment manufacturers and network operators.
The pending acquisition of Cerjac, a privately owned company with 35
employees, is part of HP's overall strategy to enhance its presence in
the area of communications test. HP and Cerjac together will provide a
broad offering of telecom test products for North America, ranging from
handheld testers to sophisticated modular test sets for SONET
(synchronous optical network) systems and B-ISDN (Broadband- Integrated
Services Digital Network), an international telecommunications standard.
Upon HP's acquisition of Cerjac, it will become a wholly owned
subsidiary within the Communications Test Business Unit (CTBU),
reporting to the Queensferry Telecommunications Division (QTD). QTD has
had the lead for HP in an earlier agreement between the two companies
(Newsgram 4/22/93) under which Cerjac would design and manufacture a T-
carrier VSI card for the HP Series 90/95 SONET/SDH analyzers.
Byron Anderson, CTBU general manager, said the combination of Cerjac's
strengths in the fields of telecom test equipment and HP's existing
products and services will give HP the largest portfolio of telecom test
products in the industry.
HP expects that Cerjac will retain its present employees, location and
product focus. John Connolly is the president of Cerjac, Inc.
Cerjac will assume responsibility for enhancing HP's current products,
as well as those under development for the North American telecom
installation/maintenance market.
Cerjac was established in 1990 and began operations in January 1991,
following the purchase of the assets of Bowmar Telecommunications
Division of Bowmar Instrument Corporation.
